any Civil War ironclad.
The USS Weehawken fired two 11 inch and two 15 inch at the Atlanta
which had run aground. the 11 inch shots caused little damage but the two 15
inch cored solid shots put the end to the contest. One shot struck the top of
the pilot house taking the roof off and wounding the pilots, the second shot
struck the casemate, breaking through the 4 inches of iron plus the 16 inches of
wood and injuring 16 crewmen. The sister ship to the Weehawken, the USS
Nahant, did not have a chance to join in the fight.
